WELSH OFFSHORE SAILORS
We are Lou and Elin, the Welsh offshore sailors. Both of us have sailed since we were very young so it has become second nature to be at sea trimming sails and helming through the waves. Follow our journey towards our first major offshore race - The Round Britain & Ireland Race this May - where we will be breaking records and making history. Read on to find out more...
Meet The Team
My name is Lou. I’m from Pembrokeshire and am a fluent welsh speaker. I got into sailing when an RYA scheme called On Board was happening near me and I tried sailing for the first time in an a wooden optimist. My love for sailing grew when I tried Toppers for the first time in Fishguard Bay at age 11. That September I was accepted into the Regional Squad and then in turn the Welsh National Squad followed by the British National Squad at the age of 15. Having started at the back of the fleet, the best feeling I have ever experienced is looking back on 200+ boats behind me as I crossed the finish line at the World Championships in 2017. After becoming the Female British Champion in 2018, I progressed into 29ers and then Aeros.
After completing my BTEC in Mechanical Engineering and A-level in Mathematics, I remembered the only thing I’ve always been sure of is sailing so I worked to make it my career. I gained my Yachtmaster Offshore qualification as well as several others along the way. Before working a season as a Lead Flotilla Skipper in Greece, I delivered several yachts around the Mediterranean, Western Europe and the UK. I recently helped refit two tallships based at Royal Albert Dock, Liverpool and now I'm busy planning my debut yacht race.
My name is Elin and I'm from Wrexham in North Wales. I have been messing around in boats for as long as I can remember. Aged 12, I decided to start racing and sailing competitively in RS Fevas and later progressed into the Topper class. I achieved a place on both the Welsh and British National Squads for two years between 2017-2019. I was also selected to represent Great Britain at the 2018 Topper World Championships in China.
Since leaving Toppers, I began sailing yachts in the Western Scottish Isles and gained my RYA Day Skipper. With these skills I have completed various yacht deliveries and passages . Currently, I am a studying towards a BSc in Psychology and Education with joint honours at Aberystwyth University. I am keen to further my sailing career and challenge myself by taking part in the RWYC Round Britain & Ireland Race of 2022 and be a part of a new record for the race as youngest female crew.
We met at Welsh Topper Squad training and raced against each other for years. We were also both selected for the British National Squads. We will also be raising money throughout the race for a charity close to both our hearts, the Alzheimer’s Society, in memory of our grandparents who were affected: Jean Boorman and Michael Jones.
